The Galapagos Giant Tortoise is probably the best known endemic species of the Galapagos Islands. Between 1830 and 1860, over 100,000 were killed by whalers - who had no access to fresh meat and had discovered if they brought the tortoises on the ship, they lived up to 2 years without food or water.They weigh up to 660 lbs., are about four feet long and live 150-200 years. The y are endangered and some of their species are already extinct.
